Rape culture is telling girls and women to be careful about what you wear, how you wear it, how you carry yourself, where you walk, when you walk there, with whom you walk, whom you trust, what you do, where you do it, with whom you do it, what you drink, how much you drink, whether you make eye contact, if you’re alone, if you’re with a stranger, if you’re in a group, if you’re in a group of strangers, if it’s dark, if the area is unfamiliar, if you’re carrying something, how you carry it, what kind of shoes you’re wearing in case you have to run, what kind of purse you carry, what jewelry you wear, what time it is, what street it is, what environment it is, how many people you sleep with, what kind of people you sleep with, who your friends are, to whom you give your number, who’s around when the delivery guy comes, to get an apartment where you can see who’s at the door before they can see you, to check before you open the door to the delivery guy, to own a dog or a dog-sound-making machine, to get a roommate, to take self-defense, to always be alert always pay attention always watch your back always be aware of your surroundings and never let your guard down for a moment lest you be sexually assaulted and if you are and didn’t follow all the rules it’s your fault. I might just copy and paste this so I can have this perfect answer ready when people say things like “but how does this “rape culture” actually affect women?”  (via fuckyeahclare)

Good Days

It’s amazing how when you’re in a sea of mediocre, average, or just straight bad days, how one great day can lift you so high so fast. I’ve been faced with many less than pleasant situations lately and am being forced to come to terms with some rather depressing realities. Sure, I can try to just not think about them, distract myself, but that never really works does it? Well, today did a pretty good job of making things slightly easier to cope with.

Despite being exhausted, I dragged myself to German 3 today. The activity was to come up with a problem you have and then your partner would give you advice. My problem “Meine Mitbewohnerin ist stinkend und sehr schmutzig.” (My roommate is smelly and extremely messy). My professor overheard my conversation and decided to present my problem to the class. So basically, a class of 20 people discussed my roommates poor hygiene and passive aggressive ways to confront her. In German. It was great.

Following that class came my German Conversation class, which is miserably difficult. Today however, we stood in a circle and said stereotypical things of girls and boys. Then listened to a weird ass song about what makes a man a man. Then learned how to say prostitute. The shit we do in college…

As the day continued, I got 2 emails. 1 was my German group’s video project (Which won for best project of the class). The second was in regards to my petition for Double Majoring in Psych and German. After a month of processing, it was approved. =)

With the good news, I called my mom. She congratulated me and told me she also lined up an interview at a daycare for a summer job. After looking into the program it turned out to be pretty much exactly what I had been hoping for. And apparently they seemed pretty excited about having someone with my experiences and skills aboard.

Finally, after dinner (which included an ice cream sundae bar, btw) Alyssa called to tell me she just bought train tickets to come stay with my from Saturday night to Wednesday morning. There is no way to describe how happy I am to know she’s coming here. I only get to see her over summer and during winter breaks now. She is the most important person in my life, and she gets to see my new life first hand. When you’re as close with someone as we are with each other, it kills us to not be there for one another in these new lives. She lives across the country from me for the majority of the year. Sure we can talk about everything, but I miss being able to show her. Her to form her own opinions of my life.

It’s late, I should go to bed. But basically, this has been a great day and I’ll be riding on this high for a while now. I needed this.

Things are as they are. Looking out into it the universe at night, we make no comparisons between right and wrong stars, nor between well and badly arranged constellations. Alan Watts (via ageofreason)
